Hamptworth Win Ramsbury Shield

On what was supposed to be one of the hottest days of the year thus far, the weather Gods played a cruel trick on the gathered teams at The Wiltshire Golf & Country Club, and instead of providing a gentle cooling zephyr served up a Force 8 gale to test even the most efficient of ball strikers!

An indication of exactly how tough the conditions were is that of the field of 52 players, only 4 broke nett par and 1 other played within his buffer zone!! This was also reflected in a CSS of 75 (rather than the SSS of 72) and a variety of 'thousand yard stares' exhibited by the competitors as they left the course.

The overall winner on the day was the aptly named Robert Putt (Hamptworth) with 39 points, who triumphed by 2 over his club mate Geoff Dear, John Parsons (Marlborough) and Clive Burton (West Wilts).

The team prize was never in doubt ad Putt & Dear combined with Terry Bruce and Dennis Garrett to bring home the bacon for Hamptworth with a magnificent 105 points, 9 more than any other side.

Second place was claimed by Tidworth Garrison (Rchard Shephard, Alan Mackay, Godfrey Tilney & Robert Thayer) who beat West Wilts (Geoff Titt, Peter Laidlaw, Ray Gregory & Clive Burton) on countback right at the death.

Huge thanks must go to Haydn Barrell and all the staff at The Wiltshire who made us so welcome, and presented the course in such great condition.
