Cornwall put to the Sword...Twice

WCGU 1st Team Vs Cornwall, Channel League 3rd September 2017

Wet and windy conditions greeted both sides when they arrived at an immaculately turned out Broome Manor last Sunday. The morning foursomes was a very close run affair, but eventually Wiltshire led at the break 3-2 with excellent wins from  the pairings of Tom Law (Broome Manor) & Max Drayton (Wrag Barn), Jack Seaman (Wrag Barn) & Jake Bolton (Ogbourne Downs) and James Cooper/Joe Retford (both Cumberwell Park).

The latter's performance was made all the more remarkable by the fact that they had been celebrating the County Captain's wedding into the early hours of Sunday morning (apparently).

The afternoon weather conditions got worse, but the Wiltshire players spirits and performances soared! Led off by Gary Slade (Bowood) (2&1) the first six players were all victorious - Simon Futcher (Broome Manor, 8&6), Captain for the day Paul McMullen (Kingsdown 3&2), Tom Law (2&1), Joe Retford (2up), and Max Drayton (2&1). Thwere were no scares as James Wiltshire (Broome Manor 2&1) and Jake Bolton (5&3) sealed the deal, to give us a convincing 11-4 win on the day.

Our final match of the season is on Sunday 24th September 2017 at Clyne Golf Club in Glamorgan. The Channel League is still wide open, with 4 of the 7 teams still capable of winning the title, including Wiltshire, and a win would put us in an extremely promising position.

Many thanks must go to Kay Hall and all the staff at Broome Manor for providing such a great course and a wonderful welcome for all the players and officials. Thanks also to our President, Phil Hodges, and Immediate Past-President, Jerry Gegg, who both stayed out in the rain to urge the boys on, and massive congratulations from all of us to Captain Ali and his Bride, Becky who married on Saturday the 2nd September 2017. Some questioned why he wasn't playing on the Sunday, but I couldn't possibly comment....
