Channel League V Somerset Kingsdown G.C. 13 May 2019
Match report (Richard Jeffery, Wiltshire Seniors County Captain)
It was a fine May day with strong wind from the East, unlike normal Kingsdown conditions. The Somerset Team arrived in good spirits and ready for the coming encounter.
The Course continues to recover from the hot summer last year, and significant patching has occurred on several fairways however, the greens were in fantastic condition This being our first outing in the senior Channel league for 2019 hopes were high and we set off determined to improve over the half match against Dorset from a month back in the Jock Lawrence Quaich.
The morning foursomes started well, and with three holes to play Wiltshire were up in three, level in one and down in one. The final scores ended level at two and a half points each.
The pm singles in we again were off to a good start being up in five matches, level in three and down in two through nine and, all looked well.
The first three past the post gave a half situation again, then Wilts lost two through Charlie and Eric but, Scott Talbert, Simon Dymoke and I brought us back to one game ahead unfortunately this quickly turned to level as Simon Davis lost on the fifteenth. That left the final pairing to decide the outcome of the match.
Most of the players, who had already finished, were stood on the left of the sixteenth to see our man Nigel who was, unfortunately at this point, three down, sink an enormous putt to pull one back. There was quiet optimism! On to Seventeen and Nigel’s shot hit mid-green and ran slightly right, just off the green, looking like a three for sure. Their man Martin hit too much club over into the back rough below the green.Unfortunately for us though Martin Cashnella had other ideas and his very strong pitch hit the flag at speed but, instead of running through the green stayed within three feet for a putt that he made to win the Match. Nigel did his very best but lady luck stole this one.
Result Wiltshire - 7 points Somerset - 8 Points

Our best Wishes to Somerset and of course our upcoming Wiltshire Team and all our supporters.
Special thanks go to all at Kingsdown GC and especially Kerry and the management team for making us so welcome once again. I should also single out the Catering and Green Staff for the excellent food and the condition of the course.
