2019 Senior men's championships held at Wrag Barn GC on 16 Jul

Wrag Barn GC was the setting for this year's Wiltshire senior men's (over 55) championship and we are indebted to the owners for allowing the county to take over the course for the afternoon. The competition was to be held over 18 holes scratch medal play for the championship with other prizes awarded for the 4 age group categories (55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and 70+). The weather for the day was hot and humid however, the golf course was presented in immaculate condition considering the lack of rain.

It is fair to say that Wrag Barn was a tough examination for all of the 69 competitors with only two breaking 80 gross. Stories abounded in the clubhouse of terrible luck and awful misfortune (typical seniors!). Notwithstanding the whingeing and moaning there were two moments of magic during the round. Michael Hart (Broome Manor) holed in one on the 16th and, two time champion, Paul Bloomfield (Kingsdown) holed his second shot on the par 4 18th.

The only two players to break 80 were runner up, the General Manager at Tidworth GC, Geoff Johnson (5 h/c) with 78 and the winner, for the first time, Chris Graham (4h/c) from Ogbourne Downs GC with 77. The CSS for the round was 74.

The winners of the four age groups were as follows:

55-59

Gross-John Steele (Broome Manor) 80

Nett- Laurance Abbot (Bowood) 35 pts

60-64

Gross-Paul Dimond (The Wiltshire) 84

Nett- Martyn Wynn Griffith (Wrag Barn) 33pts

65-69

Gross- Nigel Phillips (Kingsdown) 81

Nett- Paul Stoneham (Bowood) 34pts
