West Wilts’ SARAH GEE goes PRO in 2020

2020 has started in a hugely exciting way for the talented Warminster player, Sarah Gee.

In January, just before the start of the Qualifying events for the Ladies European Tour, the 24 year old made the decision and signed up to join the professional ranks.

Sarah said ‘For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to become a professional golfer -probably since I was in Year 7 or 8 in school when I started to take my golf seriously. I’ve loved the game since then and that hasn’t changed.

Sarah won a golf scholarship to Tarleton State University, Texas, a NCAA Division 2 College, in 2014.

‘Going to the USA was a great experience. I was able to allocate more time to practice and the weather was better than back home. I improved every year and got a taste of the life of a professional player by travelling round various States to tournaments most weeks, going to physical conditioning work -outs and I began training like an athlete rather than someone who plays golf for fun. My best result over there was being named Lone Star Conference Player of the year in 2018 - that gave me a real boost.

Since I returned to the UK in May 2018, I feel I’ve continued the trend of improving each year and I’m sure that this will continue – Currently I’m working on my putting to be even better in that department. I’ve been able to combine practice and play, funded by taking part time jobs (some of them not very glamorous!) and with great support from mum and dad and other friends.

So far I would say 2018/2019 has been my most successful season to date, starting in the winter of 2018/2019, finishing 3rd in the 2019 LET Q school pre qualifier really gave me a confidence boost that I can go pro and mix it with other good players. The 2019 season was also really good, getting a couple of wins.  My highlight rounds were shooting 8 under at Filton and 5 under at Sunningdale. I also played really well at the Inter county Match week (Undefeated playing No.1 in the team), I won the South West Championship (by 6 shots) and also won the Astor Salver (36 hole scratch at The Berkshire) All in all my performances over the season has cemented my decision to turn ‘Pro’ at Q school this January.’

Sarah now has rights to play in LETAS (Ladies European Tour Access Series) tournaments of which there are 14 scheduled for this season, the first of which will be in France - The Terre Blanche Ladies Open - 3-5 April. She will also compete in the Roehampton Gold Cup and British Open Pre-Qualifying event. She’s aiming to play in as many as possible with the goal of finishing in the Top 5 of the LETAS Order of Merit in order to secure full Tour playing rights for 2021.

As a great supporter of the Ladies County Team, a player who is always committed to continuous improvement and giving back to younger players, we wish Sarah every success . She is the second female player from West Wilts to turn professional (the first was Emma Brown, now teaching at The Kendleshire) and who was also started on her golf journey by Whitely’s Rob Morris.
