Foursomes Championship

A very wet and breezy day greeted the competitors early on Sunday morning at Salisbury and South Wilts GC but, by 9am, a rapidly improving weather situation provided warm and sunny conditions for the morning round. The wind however picked up later in the day and that had a big effect on scoring. Leading after Round 1 were Paul Mathews and James Cooper (Cumberwell GC), one stroke ahead of county captain Paul Green and Dom Baverstock-Seaman (Marlborough GC). The afternoon round was notable for the increasingly strong southerly wind which at times was gusting over 30mph. Notwithstanding that, Paul and James returned a creditable 78 and their total of 148  looked for some time as if it might be the winning score until Paul and Dom handed in an excellent 74 for a two round total of 145. The nett trophy was won by Tom Stagg and Oliver Moss, from the home club; they stood in at the last moment to replace last year’s champions who couldn’t make it due to illness. Oliver and Tom carded a total of 143 to win by three shots from Kevin Arthur and Gavin Cooley from High Post.

Our grateful thanks go to all at Salisbury & S Wilts for producing their excellent course in such fabulous condition. It was a stern but fair test for all participants and our thanks also go to the catering and bar staff for their timely service.
