Wiltshire Golf

The Future is Here!

A quick question for you - what do Justin Rose and Danny Willett have in common? English? Multiple winners on tour? Major winners? Yes, but not the answer we're looking for!

OK, we'll make it easier - Justin Rose, Danny Willett, Tommy Fleetwood, Chris Wood, Andy Sullivan, Lee Westwood & Jordan Smith?

The answer is that they all started their golfing careers playing Junior County golf in England, predominantly funded by their Unions and therefore, by you, the members.

Wiltshire is the second smallest Union in the Country, and yet we have the most successful Boys team, being English County Champions in both 2015 & 2016 - a fantastic achievement considering our 24 member clubs compare to over 190 in Yorkshire, and similar numbers in Lancashire, Surrey and BB & O.

How do we intend to improve on our success? This year, for the first time, we have introduced an Under 12 Development & Performance squad (pictured above on their latest coaching day at Cumberwell Park) to carry on the success of past generations.

The programme is being run by Broome Manor professional Lee Hayward (see above) who has planned and is delivering a structured series of coaching days and matches against other counties. Indeed, the boys are even going on tour in September to Devon & Cornwall to meet (and no doubt defeat) our most southerly neighbours.

We are always looking for talented young players with the potential to join our squads, so if you are interested please contact us either through Ian Welding, our County Junior Organiser (juniororganiserwcgu@gmail.com) or Lee Hayward (leehaywardprogolfer@gmail.com).

We''l keep you updated as the season progresses - any bets on a WCGU Major winner by 2027?
