Wiltshire narrowly lose to Gloucs in the Inter Counties qualifier

On a dull, grey, cold and windy morning, on Tuesday 12th June, at Cumberwell, 72 golfers from the six South West counties set off on their first round of two to find the SW  individual champion and SW champion county team to represent the SW in the England Golf Inter-Counties finals later in the year.

Each county could select a team of six from their squad to play all day and the team that our captain Ali James picked was as follows:

Gary Slade (Bowood)

James Cooper (Cumberwell)

Jake Bolton (Ogbourne)

Tom Stagg (Salisbury & SW)

Joe Retford (Cumberwell)

Tom Law (Broome Manor)

Another 36 individuals were allowed to enter for the individual SW counties championship but, their scores would not count towards their counties team's totals. All six score were to count so a concentrated mind was essential all day. I didn't turn up until the late morning so am only able to give you the morning scores which were:

Gary Slade 73

James Cooper 69

Jake Bolton 70

Tom Stagg 71

Joe Retford 71

Tom Law 67

our 6 under total saw the team first, level with Gloucs on 421 while Devon, on 426, and Somerset 430 were our nearest challengers. Individually Tom Sloman (Somerset) and George Bryant (Devon) were leading on 65 (-6). In the afternoon it was clear that good golf was being played by a number of individuals with a couple of them from Wiltshire however, it was Gloucs in the shape of Mich Waite who stormed up the leaderboard with an excellent 64 (-7) to finish runner-up, by one stroke, to the eventual winner Tom Sloman who replicated his morning score to finish 12 under par on 130. Third was are own Jake Bolton who returned a fine 65 to finish 7 under.

In the team event despite a 68 from Gary Slade the scores from the rest of the team, whilst decent, were not sufficient to stay with Gloucestershire who in the end won by 6 with a total of 837 (15 under). However it should be noted that we were 18 shots ahead of third placed Devon.

The individual totals for our team were:

Garry Slade 73 & 68 (141)

James Cooper 69 & 70 (139)

Jake Bolton  70 & 65 (135)

Tom Stagg 71 & 71 (142)

Joe Retford 71 & 76 (147)

Tom Law 67 & 72 (139)

This was a tremendous effort on our young teams part and we are proud of them all.

Wednesday sees us playing Gloucs in the matchplay and it should be a good one to watch.

Jerry Gegg
