Well, the nightmare season is over!! Glamorgan beat us, at Bowood, 9 to 6.
In the morning foursomes we had one match halved (Kevin Arthur-High Post and Eric Lewis-Salisbury) and the other four matches all went to the 9th hole where we won one (Paul Bloomfield - Kingsdown and Chris Graham - Ogbourne) but lost the other three. Frustrated and frustrating…? It was! Very!!
In the afternoon, Glamorgan shaded it by 5½ to 4½; our wins from Bloomfield, Graham, Simon Dymoke (The Wiltshire) and Eric Lewis; the half was earned by Per-Axel Warensjo (Marlborough).
We were well looked after by all the staff at Bowood, normally a good hunting ground for us, and the course was generally in good condition with the greens in especially good nick, running smooth and true. Thank you, Bowood.
In our 2016 season we had fun, enjoyed our golf, worked hard and got into the habit of winning matches…and won the league. In our 2017 season we did much the same things and ended up equal 2nd (on points) in the league…it was another good year. In our 2018 season I can recall much the same fun and commitment but, all of a sudden, we seemed to get stuck in a deep rut and got ourselves into a less fortunate habit…losing! No wins, six losses and one half.
My suggestion for improving Wiltshire’s chances of recovering the greatness of the previous couple of years is that, after some rumblings from the players (usually the result of too many beans for breakfast and too much beer after the matches) and the fans (all three of them!) getting a bit agitated by poor results…we get rid of the current captain and get somebody new to take over!
I’m happy to take the golden umbrella, the multi-million pound gratuity and the complimentary seat in the stands for all home matches and offer my humble thanks, particularly, to everyone who has played for the county over the last three years…it has been a huge honour to lead the county seniors and I truly consider you all as friends, not just colleagues; I know how much effort you all put into every match. I wish my successor – Richard Jeffery (Salisbury and South Wiltshire), all the very best for the future. Many, many thanks to our backroom support people…Presidents, Chairmen, secretaries, treasurers, committee members and every officer and member of clubs in Wiltshire who have contributed support to what we aspire to do for Wiltshire County.
Should any other county captains or players in our region happen to read this report, I’ve genuinely enjoyed the rivalry and camaraderie of all of our encounters and wish you all well…apart from those who took points from us! J
