Cumberwell Duo Triumph

The delayed 2020 Wiltshire Golf Junior Championships took place at a damp, but very well-groomed Cumberwell park Golf Club on Monday 26th October.

The Girl’s competition was a very closely fought affair between the 3 lowest handicappers in the field, Laura Curtis (Cumberwell), Olivia Bannon (Broome Manor) and Katie walls (Wrag Barn). The outward 9 was a fantastic 2-player duel between Olivia who shot a level par 35 and Katie who was one shot worse off.

Despite being 5 back at one stage, Laura didn’t panic, and a 1-under par back 9 of 35 saw her triumph with a total of 75, closely followed by Olivia (76) and Katie (77). The future of Ladies County Golf in Wiltshire looks in safe hands with all 3 girls being eligible to play as Juniors next year as well.

Nett honours were taken by Serena Bennett (Broome Manor) who shot a nett 71, with second and third going to Mia Talbot (Marlborough, 73) and Daisy Perrett (North Wilts, 76). It’s also worth noting that Daisy is only 12 years old, and Mia is 10 which makes their performance on a really tough day even more admirable.

If anything, the Boy’s Championship was even closer. After 18 holes 4 players were tied on 74 and we went to a 3-hole playoff between Ollie webb (Wrag Barn), Ayden Knight (Tidworth Garrison), Toby Clark (Cumberwell park) and Bradley Fitz-Henry Roe.

In tough conditions Toby stayed calm and un-flustered, mustering 3 pars which was enough to win by two shots with the other boys sharing second place. Again, youth won out as Toby and Ayden are only 13 years old and Ollie is a year older.

Overall nett winner was Wrag Barn’s Luka Drinkwater (69), beating Bowood’s harry Burton on countback with Harry Dickins (High Post) third. Luka and Harry D are 13 and Harry B is only 12 – stars of the future to look out for.

Continuing with the theme of youth, the Under-14 Gross prize (players could only win one prize) was claimed by Louis McDiarmid (Wrag Barn) and the nett by Matthew Headford (Broome Manor).

The day would not have been possible without the efforts of referees Linda Brown, Peter Andrews and Stu Mitchell, starters Barrie Reardon-Smith and Frank Ham and our indefatigable Competitions Manager Nick Chapman. Huge thanks to you all for your efforts.

And finally, a massive vote of thanks to Ali James and all the team at Cumberwell. This has been a very difficult year for all Golf Clubs, but the welcome we have received at Cumberwell Park for the 4-day Festival and this competition has been second to none. The courses have been presented in wonderful condition and your members have shown the County nothing but kindness – we are truly grateful.
