Wiltshire Fall to Devon on Day Two of SW Week

After a great start on Day 1, the Tractor Boys tee'd it up against Devon on Day 2 full of confidence. However, the first day conqurers of Kernow proved a stern test and the early exchanges were extremely close.

The standard of golf played was excellent, but unfortunately Garry Slade, Nick Korynevsky and Dom Seaman all fell to narrow defeats. Cumberwell Park's Joe Retford played outstandingly well and was unlucky to only earn a half in a match that saw inumerable birdies and eagles exchanged as fortunes ebbed and flowed. However, Johnny Grace, Tom Law and Maxy Drayton all played nervelessly and recorded full points, leaving the score a very familiar 3.5 - 4.5 in Devon's favour at lunch.

Some people say that there is no place in elite sport for sentiment...but I disagree. It was great to see Josh and Ben Loughrey back together in the afternoon foursomes and although they didn't enjoy a winning start I think the future looks great with the Wrag Barn duo back in harness. Although headed early Joe Retford and Garry Slade fought their way back into the contest and at 1 down after 12 holes momentum was turning in their favour, but lady luck was not on their side, and the Devonian pair ran out winners on the 15th.

Although this meant the tie was effectively over, points will be important in the final table and the Wiltshire tail had a fearsome sting to it. Nick Koryvensky and Johnny Grace put in a devastating burst over the last 4 holes to win 3 & 1, and the now famous Maxy/Tom combination forged on to record a 1 up victory. The final score of Devon 7.5 - Wiltshire 6.5 could have been different and the form of the Wiltshire team promises great things for the rest of the week. In the words of The Proclaimers... 'Lady Luck apologises for the way she's been behaving, but she promises she'll change'.

With the South West Strokeplay tomorrow, lets hope she choses that as a suitable opportunity! The start sheet and results in progress over the day can be accessed by clicking www.swcga.co.uk

Many thanks to Devon for a great game played in excellent spirit, and also once again to the members and staff of Burnham and Berrow Golf Club for the fabulous condition of the course and the warm welcome we have received.
