Tough Day at the Office for Wiltshire

It was always going to be tough! Gloucestershire, off the back of a convincing win in the Strokeplay qualifier, approached day 4 with confidence but the Tractor Boys were determined to give a good account of themselves and started strongly.

Garry Slade forced a half against Tom Workman and Joe Retford was hugely unlucky to go down to perenial winner Nick Day. Josh Loughrey and the undefeated Max Drayton both won their matches, but unfortunately Wiltshire reached the break with a 3 point deficit.

The afternoon conditions were perfect, sunny with a gentle breeze, but Gloucestershire have incredible strength in depth at the moment and the foursomes proved to be as tough as the singles. Johnny Grace and Nick Korynevsky gained a hard-fought half, and the indomitable partnership of Law and Drayton won 3 & 1, leaving the final result as a 9.25 to 4.75 win to Gloucestershire.

It is difficult to emphasise just how good the standard is at this level, on a tough 7,000 yard golf course, and how fine the margin is between victory and defeat. The Wiltshire team gave it their all and they will again tomorrow against Cornwall starting at 08:00 tomorrow. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Gary Ward and his team for their win, and wish them all the luck in the world representing the South west at the England County finals.
