Wiltshire Seniors Fall at the Final Hurdle

The team of Wiltshire Seniors made the long journey down to Bowood Park for their match against Cornwall with a few regulars missing and a couple of late withdrawals but bolstered by a couple of stalwarts from previous teams PX Warensjo (Marlborough) and Kevin Arthur (High Post) who were both up for the fight.

Neil Blewitt (North Wilts) was making his debut for the team and together with the afore mentioned, Mike White (West Wilts), Simon Dymoke (North Wilts), Mark Slater (Bowood), Al Paterson (Tidworth), Steve Ballard (Broome Manor), Ian Warwick (Chippenham) & Graeme Wright (North Wilts) made up the rest of the team.

The morning 9 hole greensomes were closely fought with four of the matches finalised on the ninth green and leading to a 3 – 2 lead for Cornwall at lunch.

The matchups in the afternoon looked, potentially, to be another tight competition and so it proved. 8 of the 10 afternoon matches were settled on the 18th green and unfortunately for Wiltshire, the 10’ putt holed by Richard Jones to secure a half against Graeme Wright in the last match secured an 8 – 7 overall win for Cornwall.

This was a tremendous match, played in the greatest of spirit and at a very high level and enjoyed, except for the result, by everyone.

I must mention the Cornwall Captain, Paul Clahane, a generous and kind man who did everything he could to make us all welcome and kept us entertained.

My thanks go to the team for their enthusiasm and support and I especially would like to thank both PX and Kevin for their support in standing in at short notice.

Our next match is against Somerset, again away, at Mendip Spring later in July.
