William Gray (Bill) Cardno 1st November 1947 to 20th February 2023

Sadly, Bill Cardno lost his brave battle against cancer yesterday.

Bill was born in Lennoxtown, Stirlingshire, Scotland.  He later grew up, with his two younger brothers Ross and Gary, in Pollock, Glasgow. He was a member of the ATC whilst at school and represented Scotland, at football, in some ATC International matches. He later obtained a degree in Mathematics from Edinburgh University.

Bill moved to Wiltshire in 1985 and settled in the village of Upper Seagry (Nr Chippenham). In 1987 he joined Chippenham Golf Club and was an enthusiastic and supportive member until his passing. Over the years he lowered his golf handicap to an impressive 5 and was more than competitive enough to represent the club scratch team for many years. He subsequently took over the captaincy between 2002-06 and under his watchful eye (“Don’t give them any putts”) Chippenham GC had success in the Wiltshire League 2nd and 3rd divisions. Bill volunteered to be club captain in 2014 and was very successful and well liked during his tenure.

2016 saw him take on the captaincy of the county Seniors team and in that season, despite having only golfers from 25 clubs to choose from and not that many properly low handicappers, he managed to guide the team to the Channel League title for the first time ever.

Bill will be remembered, with much fondness, as an accomplished, if somewhat unconventional after dinner/match speaker. He was a well read and educated man and his orations, whilst invariably long, were never tedious and were always peppered with anecdotes and one liner’s that kept his audiences amused.

Bill was  blessed with a five children (Andrew, Thomas, Jennifer, Alison & Deborah) and 3 grandchildren Ophelia, Isabelle, and Grace. One more, a boy, is expected in May.

In a golfing summary Bill Cardno has been a great supporter of golf at Chippenham and for his adopted county Wiltshire.  I am sure that he will be greatly missed by one and all who were lucky enough to have known him throughout the Southwest golfing community and at Chippenham we have lost one of our real characters and friends who will be greatly missed by everyone. Our condolences go to his family and loved ones.
