Great Start to 2023 For Wiltshire Boys

On a cold and blustery St George's Day Wiltshire Under-16s took on Gloucestershire at Chippenham in the Channel League. The home team came out of the blocks quickly with Ayden Knight (Tidworth Garrison) and Will Welsh (Salisbury & SW) winning 6 & 5. They were closely followed in by James Biggs (Wrag Barn) and captain Sam Hathaway (Chippenham), victorious 2 & 1 and then the partnership of Ted Hodgkinson (Bowood)/Riley Banks (Wrag Barn) who won 3 & 1.

The morning Foursomes were concluded by the Broome Manor pair of Thomas Le Leivre and Jack Mawer who halved their match, and Charlie O'Dowd with Oliver Garbutt (both Marlborough) who lost a thrilling contest on the 18th. This left the junior Tractor Boys leading by 3.5 to 1.5 at lunchtime, and they didn't let up in the afternoon singles.

Wins for Le Leivre, Hathaway, Garbutt and Banks were backed up by halves from Knight, Biggs and O'dowd to give Wiltshire an edge after lunch, and an overall 9-6 victory. Unfortunately Will Welsh suffered a back injuty on the second hole and had to concede his match, and we send him best wishes for a swift recovery.

Our thanks must go to all the staff and members at Chippenham Golf Club for hosting the match and giving us such a warm welcome. Thanks also to Chris and all the greenkeepers who have worked so hard to present the course in such great condition.
