SW Week 2023, Day 3....A Peculiar Day in Perranporth

Day 3, and the strokeplay Championship over 36 holes to decide the South West's representatives for the English County Finals, this year to be held at Southport & Ainsdale.

Each County has a team of 6 players, all of whom return scores over 2 medal rounds, and the team with the lowest aggregate is the winner...simple. There is also the overall title to contend for, with a field of 72 including the nominated team members.

Driving to the course at 06:30 a light mist hung over the rugged Cornish coast, and continued to do so until 08:20 when it became a very thick fog, and play was suspended. The tournament committee decided that if play wasn't possible by 10:30 the Championship would be reduced to 18 holes, and if it wasn't possible prior to 14:00 it would be abandoned and played on Wednesday. 10:30 came and went, but at 13:00 the mist rolled away and the players were told to return to their balls, and the starter was primed to recommence...and then the fog returned!

The Championship was abandoned and will be played tomorrow with a 2 tee start, commencing at 08:00. Tee times can be found HERE

However, the peculiar day was not done! It was decided to play Wednesday's matchplay round in an adapted format, when the fog cleared, which obligingly it did at 14:30. Wiltshire took on the home County with the game being played as 4 singles and 2 Foursomes. Yet again it was a very close encounter - both Johnny Grace and Ellis Bright lost their singles on the 17, but veterans Garry Slade (7 & 6) and Josh Loughrey (2 & 1) were on the winning side. The foursomes went down to the wire, but unfortunately Freedie T / Lewy Hayward lost on 17, and the Tom Law/Tom Scullion partnership lost on the last despite both pairs fighting desperately hard.

The above picture is about as bright as it got all day, and it was taken at 19:00!! Results can be found HERE

As is always the case at South West weekmatches hang in the balance until the end, and one moment of brilliance, or one bad bounce can decide the outcome. Wiltshire's young teams has acquitted itself brilliantly and the future looks bright.
