On a still, warm day which locals assured me is a very rare weather event in this part of Wales, Wiltshire Men took on Glamorgan at the magnificent Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club.
The morning foursomes started well for Wiltshire, especially Lewy Hayward (Marlborough) and Harry Dickins (High Post) who were 5 up after 6 in the lead match, but around the turn the Welsh players upped their game and, aided by considerable local knowledge dragged the matches back in their favour.
Lewy & Harry managed to fight hard and win 2 &1, but our other 4 pairs all succumbed to narrow defeats leaving the score at Glamorgan 4 Wiltshire 1 as the players took lunch.
Lewy & Harry Garry & Ali Jon Haines & Gav Messer (Cumberwell Park)
Josh Loughrey (Wrag Barn) Tom Law & Freddie Titcombe (Marlborough)
& Martin Sell (Cumberwell Park)
The afternoon was much closer, with wins for Lewy Hayward, Martin Sell, Garry Slade, John Haines & Freddie Titcombe. Three other matches went to the wire, so the 5-5 scoreline did not do the team justice as they fought hard against a very strong Glamorgan outfit.
Our thanks must go to all members and staff at Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club for the warm welcome, and the amazingly presented course - if you haven't played it, I recommend you do as it is a stunning venue. Thanks too to all the Wiltshire & Glamorgan players for a great match played in the best of spirits. Finally, thank you to our friends on the Glamorgan Executive committee who attended - James Pontin, David Watkins, Captain Llew Matthews (it will get easier Llew, I promise), County Sec Martin Price and the inimitable Mike Evans (why he hasn't replaced the Duracell Bunny in their ad campaigns goodness only knows).
Diolch! Welwn ni chi flwyddyn nesaf.
