Wiltshire Golf

An Exciting Finish, concludes with a 7-8 victory at Landsdown

A firm, fast and perhaps unpredictable course awaited the Wiltshire team at Lansdown Golf Club, to take on a determined Gloucester side. And after a close encounter in the morning Geensomes the Wiltshire side had a 3-2 lead going into the afternoon singles, so all to play for.

It was a nervy afternoon for the Wiltshire Team Captain, Dave Barbour with four of the first six singles matches going the way of the home side and just one win to Wiltshire and a halved match in the other two.

And so the Skipper found himself zipping back and forth between the remaining matches to try and keep up with the scores. Several comments from various players were received about firm fast greens and some particularly challenging pin positions, all making for an exciting final four matches. The back 2 matches going the way of Wiltshire and finished early, leaving 2 matches out on the course, that of Colin Edwards and Iain Quigley. Wiltshire needed 1.5 points to secure the win. Iain managed to half his match with a great shot from behind trees on 18, which left Colin out there 1 up with 1 to play. All eyes were on the tee shots, and while the Gloucestershire player hit the middle of the fairway, Colin pulled his tee shot slightly into the trees down the left. All those watching from behind the 18th green were looking to see whether Colin had a shot or not and after what seemed an age, the swoosh of the club with no sound of ball hitting foliage, the ball landing just short of the green and rolled up to around 20 foot from the pin with cheers and applause from the Wiltshire side and lots of sighs from the Gloucestershire players!! With both balls now on the green, Colin two putted leaving the Gloucestershire player with the chance of a birdie to half the match 7.5 to 7.5,. But alas, it came up just shy, giving Wiltshire the 8-7 win!! Phew!!

Thanks go out our opponents Gloucestershire, the match was played in great spirit. And to Lansdown Golf Club for hosting us on the day, Well done to all concerned.

The next match is against Cornwall at Hamptworth Golf Club on Monday 18th August. With 2 matches to go Wiltshire are challenging for the Channel League title, so all to play for!
