Girls’ South West Inter Counties 4th to 6th August 2025 Broadstone Golf Club, Dorset
The most highly anticipated tournament each year for the Wiltshire A Squad girls is the South West Inter Counties event. Nine eager girls, aged between 10 and 18, were brought by their dedicated parents to Broadstone Golf Course near Poole for Dorset to host the event this year. It’s an intense three days, with matches played against 5 other counties from the South West.
We started with a practice round for the team to acclimatise to a course they’d not played before. But the most important task of the day was the decoration of the Wiltshire buggy, with Stumpy our mascot in prime position.
Followed by the mandatory team photo of - front left to right: Lauren Cowley, Imogen Miles, Polly Maggs
Back left to right Caroline Potter (CJO), Mia Talbot, Millie Potter (Caroline and Bob’s daughter), Bo Taylor (Captain), Kayla McLane, Violet Batten, Felicity Broom and Bob Potter (Assistant CJO)
This year our team welcomed 3 new members - Violet, Felicity and Imogen. Bo was our captain, inspiring the team and in her last year giving a fantastic tear jerking speech at the prize giving.
A huge thanks to all the parents for transporting the girls and supporting them. A special mention must go to Mia’s sister, Masie, and Imogen’s brother, Max, for walking miles around the course with the team. The overall tournament results can be found here https://www.dorsetladiesgolf.org/

With Storm Floris hitting further north the day was wet and very windy, which challenged all the players. Our fantastic coach, Meg Rossouw, joined us for the day. The whole match came down to the last game and ended with a battle to the final 25 foot putt on the 18th for Mia and Violet. With the ball stopping just an inch from the hole the chance to finish all square was missed by a fraction, and so the overall match was a very close loss for Wiltshire.

Inspired by coming so close to getting a result in the morning our players were enthusiastic to start in the afternoon against a very strong side. Devon were the eventual winners of the tournament, and their only loss was to Wiltshire. Debut match successes for Imogen and Felicity were welcomed. Felicity narrowly missed a hole in one on the 15th. Millie’s eagle on the 16th helped her to win 2 up.

We expected better weather, but were surprised with some rain to start the match. Head of Wiltshire juniors, Colin Rossiter, joined us for Tuesday. What an exciting fixture with four of the matches going all the way to the 18th. Kayla and Felicity’s final putt to win their match just shaved the hole, so they tied, as was the overall match. Such a close match kept our team’s spirits high as we had a very quick turn around into the afternoon session.
Wiltshire vs Somerset Afternoon 5th August

Millie: won 4&3
Bo: withdrew injured
Imogen: lost 3&2
Foursomes:
Polly and Mia: won 6&4
Kayla and Felicity: A/S
OVERALL RESULT: Wiltshire: 2 ½ Somerset: 2 ½
Unfortunately Bo had to concede her match after 10 holes due to an injured hand. Millie and Polly with Mia both had impressive wins. Imogen stepped up to play singles for the first time, and played some great golf, including hitting the flag on the 15th. But the most exciting match was the last, with Kayla and Felicity proving to be a great partnership again. With all the players and spectators from Wiltshire and Somerset cheering them on, the match went all the way to the 18th. Kayla’s perfect drive under pressure and Felicity’s memorable “chip and run” approach to 10ft secured a par. Then everyone had their hearts in their mouths as Somerset’s putt to win lipped out to leave that match halved and the overall match as a draw.

After a long week of intense competition we came up against a very strong and determined Dorset team. Our players kept going to their last strokes, but Dorset came out on top in four of the matches. Everyone then followed Polly and Mia for an exciting last few holes. The match went all the way to the 18th green, where Polly sunk a pressure putt to win the match 2 up.
All our girls and their supporters said how much they enjoyed the event and went away enthused to play and practice more golf to be ready to finish even higher next year at Bristol and Clifton Golf Club in Gloucestershire.
