On Wednesday 20th August, the County Senior Women’s Team of Tracey Scully, Gill Loughrey, Marion Skinner and Katie Dove-Medows competed in the South West Senior Womens Gross Team Championships at Filton Golf Club in Bristol. Having come third in the event in the last two years, team captain Carol Main was hopeful that the team could improve on those results this year. The format for the championship is a team of 4 with the best 3 gross medal scores counting towards the team score.
The morning started very unusually cold with heavy drizzle, but the course seemed to be playing as tough and hard as it had on the practice round the day before, especially as the wind was up too!
After the first tranche of counties were in off the course, Dorset were leading the way with a team score of 247. Tracey Scully (Bowood) was the first Wiltshire player in with a gross 81, having finished with a flurry of birdies on the last 3 holes! Gill Loughrey (Wrag Barn) was next in, also with a gross score of 81, and another birdie on the 18th! With those two scores in we were looking good against the 247 of Dorset, but still needed one decent score. Marion Skinner (High Post) put in a solid 84 to put us on 246 with one group still out on the course. Gloucestershire were now also on 247, so there was a nervous wait for the last group to come in, as Glos could still potentially beat us! But Marion’s score was good enough to secure the win for Wiltshire! What a fantastic result and the first time that Wiltshire have won the event! Well done to all the team…. the future of senior women’s golf in Wiltshire is looking very bright! We look forward to defending the title next year in Somerset.
