Day 1 of the England Golf County Finals and it was raining!! The Wiltshire Boys started their campaign against Hertfordshire at Elsham Golf Club in Lincolnshire today, and it proved to be a very tough challenge.
Leading the team out in the morning foursomes Ayden Knight (Tidworth Garrison) and Riley Banks (Wrag Barn) started slowly, falling behind early, but soon got into their stride and pushed Ben Sessions and Antoni Hawkins all the way. Unfortunately they fell just short, losing 2 & 1, but it was a great effort against 2 experienced players - Sessions being the current South East Boys Champion.
Next out were Jack Mawer (Broome Manor) and George Mathias (Marlborough) who took control of their match quickly, and after 6 holes were 4 up. They never let their grip falter, and excellent putting saw them run out 5 and 4 winners.
Last out for Wiltshire were Ted Hodgkinson (Bowood) and Charlie Sampson (North Wilts) who also started slowly, but by the 15th had pulled their match back to be only 1 behind. However, their opponents closed the game out with consecutive birdies meaning the Tractor Boys trailed 2-1 at lunch.

The afternoon singles did not go the Wiltshire Boy's way, and despite great victories for Ayden Knight (1 up) and Ted Hodgkinson (4 & 3), Hertfordshire prevailed 6 matches to 3 overall. It was a wonderful effort from the boys, and it must be remembered that this is a very young team, with 4 of the 7 players aged 15 years old or younger. They can be rightly proud of their efforts today and we look forward to tomorrow's match against a strong Cheshire side who defeated Cambridgeshire 8-1 in Tuesdays other match.
First tee time is 08:24 and we will keep you updated on the website, X and Instagram as the day unfolds.
Finally for now, a huge thank you to all the parents supporting today, and to Ian Welding and Colin Rossiter who have managed the team magnificently!
