Under 18 Boys win SW Channel League

The U18 Channel League title came down to the final game of the season between Wiltshire and Glamorgan, with both teams coming into the match unbeaten. Glamorgan were the form team, having steamrollered the opposition in all their previous games. The match was played at the excellent Cumberwell Park Golf Club but unfortunately the weather was absolutely awful, yet the standard of golf played by both teams was exceptional, given the conditions.

Jack Mawer got the boys off to the perfect start winning his match against Glamorgan’s number one, but Glamorgan hit back straight away winning the next two matches despite the best efforts of Riley Banks and Harry Burton. Ted Hodgkinson fought for an excellent halved match to stop the momentum that Glamorgan were starting to build. What followed next was nothing short of incredible, the Wiltshire boys played some outstanding golf to win the remaining six matches, with wins for Lewis Tilling, George Mathias, James Legg, Charlie Sampson, Ruben Chauhan-Drane and Charlie O’Dowd, respectively. The morning singles finished with Wiltshire holding a commanding lead of 7.5 to 2.5.

The Glamorgan fight back started right away, out of the five matches Glamorgan held the upper hand in four. Wiltshire only needed half a point from the five matches to secure the title but it started to look like half a point was a long way off, especially as Glamorgan wrapped up three of the Foursomes matches in quick succession. Charlie and James were four down with six holes to play, but fortunately for Wiltshire our star pairing of Jack and Lewis started to take control of their match, winning both the 14th and 15th holes to win the match and secure the title for Wiltshire. Jack and Lewis finished their foursomes match 1 under par for 15 holes, which is just outstanding golf in absolutely dreadful conditions.

This left one match out on the course -  the performance of Charlie Sampson and James Legg is typical of the determination and never give up attitude all our boys have displayed in every match they play. Charlie and James came back from the brink of a heavy loss to win their match on the last hole, and securing a 9 ½ - 5 ½ win. I would like to give special praise to the Glamorgan players, officials and parents who came to support their team. The match was played in an excellent spirit, all the boys were a real credit to their respective counties, their parents and themselves. Both teams gave it everything and played some superb golf in awful conditions, the rain never stopped from the moment we arrived until the moment we all left. I would like to say how proud I am of the performance from the Wiltshire boys, they have been brilliant all season and this result is just the cherry on the top of a fantastic year for Wiltshire junior golf. A massive thank you to Ali James and all his brilliant staff at Cumberwell Park Golf Club for looking after us on the day, Cumberwell are massive supporters of Wiltshire junior golf and we are extremely grateful to them.
