SW Week Day 2.....Disappointment in the Dunes

A cloudy but windless morning greeted Wiltshire and Devon on Day 2 of SW Week 2023, with the Tractor Boys on a high after their victory against Gloucestershire the previous evening.

Again, all the matches were close - wins for Gary Slade, Johnny Grace and Ellis Bright offset by final hole defeats for Tom Scullion and Lewy Hayward. Lewy had been 4 down after 4, but fought back to level, only to be defeated by 3 birrdies in the last 3 holes. Tom Law and Josh Loughrey (battling the pain of a serious cycling accident only days before) also both lost on the last, so the score was 5-3 to Devon at the break.

However, the Foursomes was a different story - Garry Slade and Josh Loughrey led the team out and were never headed, winning 6 & 5 (although it took a couple of hours to confirm that), a score that was matched by the Tom's, Scullion and Law. With Lewy Hayward and Freddie Titcombe 3 up with 4 to play things looked positive, but some great golf by the Devon pair, and a little bit of fortune on the final hole saw the match halved.

So, with Ellis Bright and Johnny Grace still on the course, the result was in the balance, but a 2 & 1 defeat saw Devon run out match winners by 7.25 points to 6.75. It was a hard defeat to take but the young Wiltshire players aquited themselves magnificently, and are still very much in the competition.

Tomorrow id the 36 hole EG Finals strokeplay qualifier, and you can follow progress on the SWCGA Website https://www.swcga.co.uk/live
