Wiltshire County Championship 2016

Marlborough Golf Club, 15th May 2016

After all the appalling weather leading up to the event, it was a huge relief that County Championship Sunday dawned bright and sunny, if a little chilly in the brisk northerly wind chasing across the Marlborough Downs.

A full field of 72 golfers from 15 Wiltshire clubs teed it up over 36 holes of medal play golf. The swirling breeze caused problems in the first round with only 3 players shooting under par in the morning. Jake Bolton (Ogbourne Downs) and Tom Law (Broome Manor) shared second place on 71 with 6 players one shot further back in 4th, but the clear leader with a great 69 was home favourite Ben Amor.

Scoring in the afternoon was slightly easier, but even then, only 6 players shot under par. Paul McMullen (Kingsdown) came back in 71 to claim 5th Place with a 145, closely followed in 4th by Charlie Dunn (West Wilts) who repeated his 72 morning round for a level par 144. Third place on his own belonged to Jake Bolton who added a fine 72 for a final 143, and Jamie Amor shot out of the chasing pack with a PM 69 to claim second place by 1 shot.

However, the day belonged to his brother Ben, who carded a majestic 65 in the afternoon to win by 8 shots with a combined total of 134, ten under par. Congratulations to all the winners, but especially Ben Amor who bore the burden of favouritism stoically, and who will now go on to represent Wiltshire in the England Golf County Champions Final to be played at Woodhall Spa on the 11th September 2016.

The winning Club in the County Team shield competition were the Marlborough trio of Jez Tomlinson, Simon Futcher and Ben Amor who will represent Wiltshire in the English Club Championship at Stoke-by-Nayland later in September this year.

Finally, I must say a huge thank you to Alastair, Les, Trish King and all the staff at Marlborough whose efforts helped to turn the course out so well, and make it a memorable day for everyone who played and spectated. Also, we couldn’t put on any tournament without the expert guidance of our EG Referees Linda Brown, Paul Berry & Nigel Duda, plus the organisation skills of Competitions Manager Nick Chapman.
